I want to write more, but for now I'll just write this: did you know that home birth is illegal? Yes, against the law. I knew that already but it's one of those things that I thought surely this is a violation of privacy and has been reversed by now. But I looked it up, and sure enough, it still is.
Physicians were behind making it illegal. I read a very interesting book recently about birth, called, um, Birth.
Check it out.
Childbirth sounds really scary, but the thought of going to a hospital makes it much scarier for me. Why shouldn't I be able to choose home birth? I just can't understand. It's ridiculous. If you're at all interested, I highly recommend the book. It's a fascinating read, and a very quick one as well. Check out the website for Georgia group Citizens for Midwifery or their blog for more information about the midwifery situation specifically.
Sorry about the short entry but I have so much to do today!

Update: Thanks to the comment, a word of clarification. You are legally allowed to have your baby at home (home birth). However, it is a violation for midwives to attend the birth. Ironic, isn't it? Since the home birth laws presumably are made with the mother and baby's safety in mind.
Also, there will be a film festival in Augusta sponsored by Better Augusta Birth Experience this weekend, but unfortunately I will be out of town at a family reunion. I hear it will be coming to Atlanta in the next few months, though. I'll try to keep you posted.

Homebirth actually isn't illegal in any state. Having a midwife at a homebirth, however, IS illegal in some states (ridiculous). Women who want homebirths can legally do it unassisted, and many do. In the next few months there's going to be a film festival in Atlanta that will be showing several homebirth films including the unassisted birth documentary "A Clear Road to Birth." If you're interested, contact me for more details.
